Powerstroke: the beginning
It all began when Ford Motor Company and the International Truck and Engine Corporation combined to make a 6.9-liter diesel engine. That was in 1982. In the 1990's the partnership continued and then, in 1994 the Powerstroke diesel engine hit the market. It wasn't long before the 7.3 diesel engines became number one.
Powerstroke diesel: Ford trucks
The Ford family of trucks that are equipped with the Powerstroke diesel engines include the popular the F-250 to the F-550 Super duty pickups. Why do pickup owners want these engines? Aside from the power and performance, diesel engines are more fuel-efficient. Over the past ten years, the fuel economy of these engines has increased from 10-30 percent and that's good news considering that better fuel efficiency spells cleaner air.
Part of the reason the diesel engine enjoys so much torque is that the piston's compression stroke is so strong it causes the fuel to combust, unlike gas engines which rely on spark plugs to ignite the fuel. Customers have said that they chose the Powerstroke because it has performance that is second to none. Designs that include pad mounted accessories help to reduce noise and vibrations. The top-mounted oil and fuel filters make servicing easy. Some customers have just come to rely on the durability.
Racing enthusiasts have come to know this engine as a force to recon with. Just ask anyone who's ever been to the Nascar Craftsman Truck Series Powerstroke Diesel 200 race. Held at the Indianapolis Raceway Park, these races are gathering crowds and growing in popularity. For the racing crowd, this engine was built for the checkered flag.
