Every automaker turns out a few clunker ideas now and again. In other instances, the ideas are great, but the execution is flawed. This often shows up in places where critical parts do not operate as expected, or else they have a shorter service life than required.

Unfortunately, a lot of problems crop up in the middle of a trip rather than at the beginning. You load up the family for vacation, hook up your 5th wheel, make it halfway up the pass, and suddenly your truck feels like it is running on two cylinders. Those are the types of things you truly dread.

In the case of Ford’s 2004½ to 2010 6.0 diesels, that is exactly the sort of problem that can rise up and bite you if you aren’t careful. The culprit is a pair of innocent-looking little tubes lurking inside your engine that are known as stand pipes.

Stand pipes connect the high-pressure pump that supplies fuel to the engine with the oil rail on top of the cylinders that distribute that fuel to the injectors. They are really just a simple metal tube with o-rings on each end to ensure they seal tightly. Over time, and occasionally due to inferior parts, these o-rings can fail. Leaky o-rings mean that you are not getting full fuel pressure to the oil rail and thus to the injectors.

This in turn means that each cylinder is getting only a partial charge of fuel on every cycle. Low fuel means the vehicle will be hard to start and will lack power. This will be especially true when you need the power of that big diesel the most.

In the event that this sounds familiar to you, you might want to think about changing out the ones in your engine. This is not a problem that is going to magically cure itself. Instead, it will only get worse over time—perhaps to the point where the engine won’t run at all—and then you are stuck with that huge tow bill and a severe beating at the nearest repair shop, no matter what they want to charge you.

This is a task that you can do for yourself. Given the increasing age of these trucks, proactively replacing these parts, which are known weak points in the system, is a great way to ensure that your vacation goes as planned.
