Optimize Your Truck’s Performance with a Transmission Cooler Bypass Delete Kit
The Compromise of One-Size-Fits-All Designs
One of the problems that every truck manufacturer has to deal with is the need to make one-size-fits-all vehicles rather than ten different single-purpose ones. This means that trade-offs become a necessity in the design and production processes. In the case of a heavy-duty truck, the manufacturer has to take into account the customer’s need for something that can haul a very heavy load with ease. Yet it must simultaneously have a soft, comfortable ride for those times when it doesn’t have a pallet of concrete in the back.
These compromises often mean that the truck doesn’t ride as nicely as it could or haul as much as is theoretically possible if it doesn’t have to ride nice at all. In the case of the 1999–2003 Ford trucks equipped with the 4R100 automatic transmission, one of those compromises has long been known to the aftermarket community. This refers to the external cooler bypass tube that was installed at the factory in one of these splitting-the-baby compromises.
The Function and Flaw of the Cooler Bypass Tube
Obviously, a transmission under a heavy load needs all the fluid cooling it can get. Yet the same factors that suggest uninterrupted coolant flow as an ideal result in long wait times until the transmission coolant reaches normal operating temperature. The factory solution was to install the aforementioned bypass tube, which cut off a significant amount of fluid being directed towards the external cooler and instead fed it right back into the transmission itself.
This resulted in a transmission that warmed up faster and then got all the coolant it needed once the trip was seriously underway. The only problem with this is that the bypass system has been known to develop glitches, particularly as the system ages, and it has to deal with less-than-pristine ATF in the system.
Risks of a Faulty Bypass System
If the glitch were to operate in favor of keeping the system moving fluid full throttle through the cooler, nobody would ever notice. As fate would have it, however, the glitch doesn’t stick the valve in the open position. Instead, you guessed it, the valve sticks in the closed or always-bypassed position. This can lead to some unimaginably bad things happening to your truck if you aren’t careful.
The Solution: Transmission Cooler Bypass Delete Kit
In essence, this throws the design philosophy back in your court. If you think your valve is sticking or just don’t want to take any chances about it going bad somewhere down the road, you can opt to replace the bypass assembly with a fresh, OEM-style system and go back to the one-size-fits-all design philosophy.
On the other hand, you can opt to delete the bypass assembly in your 4R100. Whether this is a remedial or proactive step doesn’t really matter. In either case, your truck will be more aligned with the single purpose of keeping your transmission as cool as possible under all circumstances. You will be opting for maximum performance if you avail yourself of a simple-to-install transmission cooler bypass delete kit rather than sticking with the compromised original design.
