Maximizing Your Truck’s Stand Pipes: The Importance of Maintenance in Modern Ford Trucks

One of the undeniable truths about modern cars and trucks is that, properly maintained, it is now reasonably common to get 200,000 and even 250,000 miles out of them. That number can change a bit if you have teenagers at home, of course. Regardless, vehicles have moved way beyond the 100,000 that used to be a good yardstick in the past.

This extended life cycle means that things now wear out in modern vehicles that used to be less of a problem with previous model years. If a part is expected to fail at 150,000 miles and you only get 100,000 on the odometer before the vehicle is a complete scrapyard candidate, the chances are good that you’ll never have to worry about it going bad.

If you are going to rack up a quarter million, then the chances are good that you’ll need to deal with it sometime or another. This appears to be the case with Ford trucks. These trucks rely on a high-pressure supply of fuel oil in order to feed the injectors. In the event that the supply system develops leaks, you are going to have problems both in startup and in overall performance.

One place where those leaks are most likely to happen is in the stand pipes on each side of the engine. These are the tubes that connect the high-pressure pump to the oil rail that feeds diesel into the injectors.

Stand pipes are sealed against leakage by o-rings on each end of the pipe. As the o-rings age, they provide a less positive seal against the high pressure stream of diesel fuel that passes through them.

Leaks drop the fuel pressure at the injectors. This in turn reduces their performance and such declines tend to accelerate over time. In the case of the 2004.5 to 2010 6 liter diesel engines, replacing an ailing stand pipe is complicated by the fact that most replacement parts, including those available directly from the dealership, are of noticeably low quality.

If there is anything worse than having to replace parts inside your engine, it is replacing parts in your engine and then having the new parts fail very soon thereafter. Make sure you arm yourself with the highest-quality replacement parts and revel in the knowledge that you only have to do the job once and never again.
